- כָּמַן(cmp. כָּמַר) (to be heated in the ground, to be hidden, lie in wait. Pi. כִּמֵּן to hide fruits in the ground. Maasr. IV, 1 המְכַמֵּן Mish. a. Bab. ed. (Ms. M. המכמיר, Y. ed. המכמר, v. כָּמַר). Hif. הִכְמִין to keep witnesses hidden, a proceeding applied only against seducers to idolatry (v. מֵסִית). Snh.VII, 10 מַכְמִינִין לו עדיםוכ׳ the court puts witnesses in wait for him behind an enclosure. Y.Yeb.XVI, 15d bot.; a. e.Y.Snh.VIII, 21c top המַכְמִין עדיווכ׳ he who keeps witnesses hidden (while eliciting a confession of indebtedness from his debtor), has done nothing, i. e. the confession has no legal consequences.
